Karen Read Murder Trial: New Details Emerge About Lead Investigator's Texts

Subsequent Opening Statements Reveal Text Messages Between Investigator and Witness

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, Karen Read appeared in Norfolk Superior Court for the opening statements in her murder trial. New details emerged during these statements, including information about text messages between the lead investigator in the case and a witness.

Texts Between Investigator and Witness Raise Questions

During the opening statements, prosecutors presented evidence of text messages between the lead investigator, Detective James O'Brien, and a witness who was present at the scene of the crime. The text messages indicated that Detective O'Brien had shared information with the witness that was not supposed to be released. This raised questions about the potential bias of the investigation.

Defense attorneys, however, argued that the text messages were taken out of context and that they did not constitute evidence of bias. They argued that Detective O'Brien was simply trying to gather information from a witness who was cooperating with the investigation.

The judge overseeing the case has not yet ruled on the admissibility of the text messages as evidence. The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks.
